What to see near Wat Chiang Man
Wat Chiang Man sits at the quiet northern end of the Old City, which makes it the natural first stop of a walking loop. Everything below is within 25 minutes on foot, and the whole set fits into one relaxed day.
Three Kings Monument — 10 minutes south
The open plaza where Ratchadamnoen Road meets the old city pillar area, with bronze statues of Mangrai, Ruang and Ngam Muang, the three kings who founded Chiang Mai.
- The grand plaza is free, shaded in the evening and popular with families.
- Behind it stands the Chiang Mai City Arts & Cultural Centre, air-conditioned and worth 45 minutes of context before you go temple-hopping.
- The city pillar shrine (Inthakhin) is tucked behind the monument — no photography inside.
- Public toilets and a drinking-water station are on the plaza.
Wat Phra Singh — 15 minutes west
The largest monastery inside the moat and the home of the revered Phra Singh Buddha image. It is the counterpart to Wat Chiang Man: bigger, busier and more formal.
- The Lai Kham Hall holds fine Lanna murals of daily life and court scenes.
- The gold chedi behind the main hall is visible from Ratchadamnoen Road.
- Entry is free; donations welcome at the hall.
- Combine it with Wat Chiang Man in one morning — 20 minutes of walking between them.
Wat Chedi Luang — 20 minutes south-west
A vast 15th-century stupa that partially collapsed in an earthquake, now partly restored. The scale is the point: it was once the tallest structure in the city.
- The brick core and the elephant buttresses survive; the top was rebuilt with UNESCO support.
- The "City Pillar" shrine and the wooden city-pillar house stand on the same compound.
- Monk Chat sessions let you talk with novice monks in English — a highlight for older children.
- Allow 30–45 minutes; the compound is bigger than it looks from the road.
Sunday Walking Street and the food scene
If you are here on a Sunday, Ratchadamnoen Road turns into a handicraft and street-food market from about 16:00 to 22:00, right between Wat Chiang Man and Wat Phra Singh.
- Best khao soi and sai ua stalls cluster near the temple end of Ratchapakhinai Road.
- Prices are fixed and marked at most food stalls; cash is faster than card.
- The market makes walking slow — budget double the usual time between temples on Sunday evenings.
- Weekday evenings: the small Night Market food court off Ratchapakhinai is the quieter alternative.
Half-day route: the Old City core (3–4 hours)
A loop that covers the three great temples without backtracking, starting and ending at Wat Chiang Man.
- 08:00 — Wat Chiang Man, empty courtyards and soft light on the elephant chedi.
- 09:00 — Walk south to the Three Kings Monument and the City Arts & Cultural Centre.
- 10:30 — Wat Chedi Luang, with a Monk Chat if the board says sessions are on.
- 12:00 — Wat Phra Singh, then lunch on Ratchadamnoen Road.
- 13:30 — Back north through the sois to Wat Chiang Man for the afternoon quiet.
Full day: add the river and the mountain
If you have a whole day, extend the loop beyond the moat.
- Afternoon — Grab or songthaew 20 minutes to Wat Suan Dok and the riverside Warorot Market.
- Late afternoon — continue 15 km up the mountain road to Doi Suthep for the sunset view over the city.
- Evening — back in the Old City for the Sunday market or afoot massage on Ratchapakhinai.
- Wear temple-appropriate clothing all day so nothing needs changing at Doi Suthep.
